BBC drama Survivors filmed in Birmingham

BBC's filming of the series

Edmund Street BirminghamAfter all of the millions spent on Birmingham’s resurgent financial district in recent years, a TV crew made the most of the area yesterday – by filling the streets with tons of rubbish.

But that’s what you get when you invite a post-apocalyptic BBC drama like Survivors to town.

Newhall Street and Edmund Street were closed to normal traffic to enable a film crew in the back of an open-top Land Rover to whizz across the landscape of detritus under the watchful gaze of a giant poster of Matthew Boulton on top of the Central Library.

Heaven knows what the man who helped to make Birmingham the centre of the manufacturing universe more than 200 years ago would have made of the city’s latest commercial development, but many locals and tourists alike were wandering the streets looking lost and bemused.

With another BBC series, Hustle, set to follow Survivors into the city later this year, locals are set to have to get used to film crews taking over.
